Problem → Vision
In many regions of Africa, the Middle East and Oceania, communities live next to the sea or brackish wells – but still lack reliable drinking water and irrigation water.
Fuel for pumps and reverse osmosis systems is expensive, membranes and spare parts are difficult to obtain, and maintenance requires trained specialists.
Oasis Minare was created as a simple, passive desalination device that uses sunlight, air and locally available sand to support both people and crops.
What is Oasis Minare
Oasis Minare is a compact passive desalination unit based on a Japanese patent application for a solar-powered freshwater production device.
Non-fresh water is stored in a shallow tank, warmed by the sun, and evaporated through special openings in a heat-conductive cover. Above each opening a metal condensation cap is installed. Inside each cap, water vapour condenses on the inner surface and is collected in a ring-shaped groove, then drained as clean freshwater.
The core idea is to realize robust desalination without membranes or high pressure, using only stable mechanical parts that can be manufactured and serviced locally.

How It Works – 4 steps
Evaporation tank with sand layer
Non-fresh water (seawater, brackish water) is fed into a shallow tank. Inside the tank a dispersed layer of fine particles (for example, local sea sand) increases the evaporation area and stabilises the water film.
Solar heating through a conductive cover
The tank is closed with a flat heat-conductive cover (for example, dark-coloured metal).
Several through openings are made in the cover. Sunlight heats the cover and the thin water layer below it, so water evaporates and vapour flows up through the openings.
Condensation inside metal caps
Over each opening a hollow condensation cap is fixed. The cap has a central lower opening connected to the tank and an inner ring-shaped groove at the bottom.
Water vapour enters the cap, contacts the cooler inner surface, condenses into droplets and flows down into the groove.
Freshwater drainage and brine discharge
From the ring groove the condensate flows through a small drain pipe to an external freshwater container.
The concentrated brine remaining in the tank is removed through a separate outlet with a filter, as described in the patent application, so that the sand layer and tank can be washed and reused.
Key features
  • No membranes, no high pressure
only evaporation and condensation on robust metal parts.
  • Purely solar-driven
the core device operates without fuel or grid electricity.
  • Modular design
multiple caps on one tank; units can be combined for higher output.
  • Agriculture-ready
freshwater can be used for drinking, for seedlings and drip irrigation, helping to stabilize local food supply.
  • Designed in Japan
based on a Japanese patent application and Japanese engineering practice.

Technology & Patent section
The design of Oasis Minare is based on a Japanese patent application for a solar-driven freshwater production device.

The application describes:

  • an evaporation tank with a dispersed layer of small particles such as sea sand,
  • a heat-conductive cover with multiple through openings,
  • hollow condensation caps with an inner ring-shaped groove and a drain pipe for collected condensate,
  • and a discharge structure for concentrated brine with filtering.
  • We are currently preparing prototypes and pilot units that follow this patented architecture and can be adapted to local conditions in different countries.
Project status & Partners
Oasis Minare is now at the stage of engineering design and field-oriented prototyping.

We are looking for:

  • local partners in Africa, the Middle East and Oceania,
  • NGOs and social enterprises working on water and agriculture,
  • universities and technical schools interested in joint research and education projects.
  • Together we want to develop practical passive desalination units that can be manufactured, installed and maintained locally.
